OK I'll answer my own question :-) It seems to be something to do with the order in which libraries are built, or maybe something picking up an old version of a library. I already had libgd-2.0.33 and GD-2.19 I re-compiled and re-installed first libgd and then GD. Then Chart worked! If you have a similar problem you might want to try that.
