I use all the comment fields already, and look for a tag where I could mark, that this picture was modified (I "shaved" the border with Imagemagick). I don't mind to which group this tag belongs. Maybe there is a tag in XMP, which fits?

You could borrow the XMP-crs:HasCrop tag for this purpose:

exiftool -hascrop=true image.jpg
