Extracting data from images in EPS or PDF files
Hi there, I was wondering if this tool was able to read the EXIF data from embedded images. Say several images are placed on an InDesign file then exported as an EPS or PDF. Can EXIF Tool drill down multiple levels to extract the data from those embedded images? Thanks in advance. Nick

Re: Extracting data from images in EPS or PDF files
Hi Nick,

Older versions of ExifTool did this for EPS images, but some users found it confusing because all information was lumped into a single group when returned. It is on my to-do list to come up with a mechanism to allow meta information for individual embedded images to be distinguished. If I can do this, I should be able to figure out how to add this ability to PDF as well.

Re: Extracting data from images in EPS or PDF files
Hi Nick,

Yes, versions back to 6.20 are still up on the main exiftool web server, and all versions from the first are still up on the backup server.

Try version 6.93 -- this is the last version that extracts XMP from embedded documents in EPS files.

Re: Extracting data from images in EPS or PDF files
hi Phil, I've only now had a chance to come back and look at this, however i cannot seem to get it to read the embedded files (and couldn't find the switch to use). I'm using 6.93 as you suggested. Any developments on when it may be included back in a new release? Cheers, Nick

Re: Extracting data from images in EPS or PDF files
Hi Nick,

With exiftool 6.93 and earlier, XMP from the main document as well as from embedded images as long as they aren't encoded. There is no controlling this, and all the XMP will be mixed together. I don't have a PDF with an embedded image such as this so I can't test it out myself. If you could send me one I could take a look at this (email it to phil at owl.phy.queensu.ca -- up to 10 MB should be OK).
